Puketona, Bay of Islands, April 24th, 1871 My dear Sir As you intimated when here last that it would be better not always to write officially upon every subject, I deem it best on the present occasion to communicate privately to you the information I have to give. A misunderstanding at present existing between Hongi and Paora on the one part, and Wiremu Naihi on the other part about a tract of land at Whangaroa called Otangaroa is causing some little excitement amongst them. iremu Naihi wishes the land to be divided, Hongi and Paora object claiming the whole as their own, and some rather loud talk has taken place about fighting sooner than give in. I was on my way to Whangaroa last week but had to return from the Kerikeri being too unwell to proceed, I wrote however from thence to Hongi and Paora requesting Tango who was to accompany me to go on and see them which he did. I have not as yet received an answer from them but Tango's report is not altogether satisfactory, a meeting is however to take place shortly at Kaeo, a Hahunga at which all parties are to be present when I hope they may be able to settle the question. I have thought it right to name the subject to you to prepare you for any exaggerated statements which might reach you. Having to be in Auckland on the 4th of May I trust I may have an opportunity of seeing you. I remain my dear Sir Yours sincerely Edward M. Williams The Honorable Donald McLean Auckland
