Grahamstown February 13th. 1870. Dear Sir, Piniaha te Wharshowhai, now known as ''Tamake'' gave me the letters herewith. I met him yesterday at the mouth of the Piako, at a fishing Station there. I told him what I was there about, vis, -- going over the proposed line of telegraph. He made no opposition whatever, to that part of the proceeding; but said he, the Hau Hau party, would oppose the putting up of the posts, as those who had agreed to the Telegraph were joint owners with them, of the land; and could not give the consent with was with-held by the others. In a conversation which took place between us, he spoke with reference to the supply of arms reported to have been sent from Piako to Te Kooti. He said -- ''Mehemea e tirchia marama tia ana e au tana mohi ka haere marama atu aku pu me aku paura ki a ia, ko tenei kahore tana mahi i marama ki tahu titio.'' (N.B. The foregoing piece in Maori copied as near as possible as it looks.) Now I place a great deal of dependence upon this man, and am much pleased to find so marked a difference between the manner in which he regards Te Kooti, and the view taken of him by the Ohinemuri natives. He said it was rumoured the Government was about sending troops up the Waihou and Piako; and he added, -- ''If that is the case, speak the word openly, and we will have a fair stand-up fight first.'' He told me in March next he intended going to Tekangamutu, to attend a large Meeting of all the people. We were driven back by bad weather last evening, from Piako; the tides being so high as to leave no dry spots available for camping. We start again this afternoon, if the weather moderates. Your obedient servant (Signed) E.W. Puckey.
