New Plymouth October 7, 1872 My Dear Sir, I send you a copy of a letter I have received from P. Wilson - I am very much afraid Worgan is playing double. There are many things which have come under my notice since we were at Patea in February last which have shook my confidence in him - He came to Parihaka after the meeting was over, accompanied by an agent of Ballances, what his particular reason might have been for coming there I know not - They arrived late in the evening and as I left the next morning I saw but little of him - He commenced talking to me in the presence of William McDonnell about the iniquitous treatment of Hone Pihama and his people by the Government and proposed to recommend them to go back of their own accord to their land - I told him I should object to any such movement and should use my influence with the Natives to induce them to wait for an amicable arrangement - This I recommend without delay and if left to me to carry out I think I can prevail upon Hone and others, for only a few to go back this season - On returning I find Worgan acted on his own opinion and advised Hone to send some of his people back to Whareroa - Had you been in office at the time I should have reported it officially to you - From what he said to me at Parihaka I could only infer that there was a screw loose and that there had been some unpleasantness between you, in fact he told me "he had had a row with you and that he was tired of the whole thing" - I was careful not to say much to him for I am of opinion he is not to be trusted, and that if he is working in in the double capacity which he is said to be, the sooner he is debarred from acting as a Government official the better, for it will only give rise to unplesant complications - I hope soon to hear that you have come in with the flood tide and resumed office again - You will have a supporter in Atkinson if Mr. F. is not in your Ministry - Please consider this letter strictly confidential - Yours Ever Faithfully Robert Parris
