Letter from Donald McLean, to the Honble, the Colonial Secretary, dated 30th. July 1850. reporting visit to Rangitikei, in consequence of threats of natives. COPY. Rangitikei, 30th. July 1850. Sir, I have the honor to report to you for the information of His Excellency, the Lieut. Governor, that I visited Rangitikei yesterday, in consequence of some trouble being threatened by a party of Otara natives headed by a Chief named Pohe. This Chief, whose followers are principally outcasts from the Taupo and other tribes, has with many others throughout the Island, viewed with considerable alarm and discontent, the inland extent of the Rangitikei purchase; and he has lately assumed a right to the Porewa, and portions of the Interior parts of the purchase, to which he cannot establish any claim. To-day I held a meeting at Parewanui Pah, with Pohe and his followers; when all the natives who sold the district were present, besides Chiefs who I invited from Whanganui and other places. The result of the Meeting has been that Pohe could not give any satisfactory reason for his conduct, further than objecting in a general way to the possession of the land by Europeans; as he apprehended that the Rangitikei purchase would lead to the acquisition of more of the Interior; and eventually dispossess the inland tribes of all their lands. I assured him that his fears were quite unfounded, as his claims appeared to be. Therefore I advised him to discontinue his opposition, and return to Otara, where I would shortly visit him, to fix and lay down an Interior boundary line, which would exclude all the lands about the Otara settlement. I am glad to state that although Pohe seemed rather dissatisfied with the result of his visit, he agreed to return to Otara, and accordingly did so, immediately afterthe meeting dispersed. I have the honor to remain, Sir, Your most obediect servant, (Signed) Donald McLean. Land Commissioner. To:- The Honble, The Colonial Secretary, Wellington.
