Miramar Aug 28, 1874 My dear McLean, Moorhouse tells me that you are the only person who offered to help in developing the township of "Kilbirnie". I shall remember that you did all you could to help in the matter. I have failed with the upper ten but am not disposed to abandon the project - given time more might be made by waiting, but it would be wise to interest as many as possible in the opening of Evans Bay to population even at a considerable sacrifice. Moorhouse proposed 120 shares at £50 each - or 80 shares exclusive of those retained by me. I am inclined to try in another class of Society 400 shares of £10, each, or 800 shares of £5, each. I think it possible that this might be worked up among the contractors and and railway workmen. My reason for thinking so is that I have had enquiries for allotments from contractors 1000 shares at £5 each would be the correct thing, giving £1000 for road making and expenses. It appears to me that investors would probably clear 100 p. c. in a few years, although the return in the meantime might be small. I should like to make hay while the sun shines, or in other words make myself secure while things are prosperous. Can you give me any suggestions or advice in the matter or do you think it would be advisable further to consult Mr. Vogel? You can show him this note if you like. The main difficulty is generally in the choice of an agent. Moorhouse has played his game and failed. If I go further I must employ someone else. Believe me, Yours sincerely, James Crawford. Sir D. McLean K. C.M.G.
