Auckland, January 14 - 1861 My dear General, The reinforcements now in sight will soon be on their way to join you at Taranaki. I find that the Native officers are still quarrelling which I much regret. If it meets your approval, Mr. Hay will be requested to return to his District, and another officer sent to replace him. I find that the sending of war vessels to the White Cliffs, which was advised by Mr. Hay is likely to afford tribes about here and elsewhere a pretext for attacking out-settlers. Some communications have been received from the Natives on the subject, which I have not time, as the mail will shortly leave, to enclose. I merely mention this to show how very insecure our New Zealand settlements are, and how much they may be affected by what may appear a very trifling circumstance. I have no news to send by this Mail. Hoping you are well, I remain, My dear General, yours faithfully Donald McLean
