New Plymouth May 10, 1861. My dear Sir, As there is a mail going out for Auckland, I write a few lines to inform you that I returned yesterday from Taranaki (Hangatawa) at which place the Ngamahangas assembled to meet me. Poharama, Raniera, Porikapa, Ngarongomate and some others accompanied me. A meeting had been convened at Kapoaiaio beyond Waream the day before I arrived. The Warea Natives were unfavourable to the Governors temrs, which produced a warm discussion, and a threatened seperation. Karaka - Aperhama Ngatawa - Matakatea's Wife and some of their people attended our meeting at Hangatawa. The Ngamahanga's are coming to Moturoa on Monday next, when before admitting any of them into Town I shall demand their signature of approval to the Governors terms. A very large meeting is to be held at Waitotara soon, the object of which is to recommend the refunding of the £500 which you paid them, and repossess themselves of the land. I am going to Waitara today from thence to Te Arei. I send by Mr. Smart your Trowsers made by McDonald. Karira and his Wife are proceeding to Manukau by one of the vessels thitherwards bound. Should any of your officers see him, please request them to hasten his return, as the Natives are troublesome in Town, and require vigilant attendance of the Police. Be so kind as to favour me with a few lines respecting future proppects. Yours very respectfully, Robert Parris. Donald McLean Esqre. Auckland.
