New Plymouth February 1st. 1851. Sir, I beg to forward the Report for the fortnight ending this day:- Sunday Parade at ten o'clock. I posted a packet to you by the Overland Mail of this day to Wellington. John Johnson sworn in as a Special Constable, in place of George Gutch, discontinued. The Attorney General, Captain Travers, and Mr. Pitt, left for Auckland. Force in town. Met at Barracks, and then went on duty. Overland Mail left for Auckland. Te Ngahuru came to Barracks. The same brought Penewhiri into town, for stealing 1/6 from Hemi, both natives belonging to Taranaki. The prisoner was taken to Captain King's residence. Mr. Wickstead was present. Judgement - fined 6/-. Paid by Te Ngahuru. Overland Mail from Wellington. Hane Wiremu, from Mauwitiwiti, came to Barracks, to recover payment for board and attendance supplied to four discharged soldiers from the 65th. Regiment, when on their road to this settlement. Enquiry was made, when it was found that two out of four had left for Auckland; a third was at Waitara, and the fourth was in town, who denied any participation in the promises alleged to have been made by his absent comrades. General muster. The "Sarah Berry", Northank, from Whanganui, and sailed for the Bay of Islands. A Ngatiruanui native stole a cap from Mr. Gem's shop, this morning. Hakopa left for the Hua at an early hour this morning, to examine three natives, who left town last evening, on their return to Ngatiruanui. Sunday Parade at ten o'clock. The "Sir Edward Paget", 482 tone, Barclay, from Auckland, with passengers and goods for thie settlement. The "Shepherdess", Swan, from Kawhia; passenger - Mr. Gerald Woon. The same sailed for Wellington, additional cargo - 5 tons wool. Intelligence received of the death of His Excellency, Lieutenant Governor Pitt, K. H. at Auckland, on the 8th. inst. One of the Auckland Native Policemen arrived this evening, with despatches for the Govenor-in-Chief. Hakopa returned this evening, with Hemi, a Ngatiruanui native, on whom the stolen cap was found. Heale on duty at the Bonding Store. Gems v. Hemi - defendant admitted the robbery, fined 12/- Honi Ropiha, one of the Assessors, was present. Hemi Karena, the native Policeman, from the North, left for Wellington. Police on duty in town. I posted Abstracts for your signature, by order of the Resident Magistrate. The "Sir Edward Paget" having discharged, sailed for Wellington; passenger - Mr. Bienvenu (one of the "Eden's" passengers): additional cargo - 10 bales wool. Died - Caroline Rundle, at age of 26. Overland Mail from Auckland. Received, and distributed "Maori Messengers". A public Meeting held at the "Seven Stars", about the removal of this settlement into the Southern Province. The majority in favour of remaining in the Northern Province. The Colonial Surgeon recommended Hakopa to be relieved for the present from night duty. A quarrel took place amongst some Puketapu natives, on consequence of Ohaia (a Porewarewa) striking Mohi, when out fishing together in a canoe, since broken up by Tamati Waka, Te Ngara, Henere, pene and Te Horo, in satisfaction of the injuries received by Mohi. The late Caroline Rundle buried. General muster and drill, after which Medland went on duty at the Police Office, and Heale in town. Te Tahana came to Barracks and reported the destruction of a canoe in payment for the assault on Mohi. A stranger, who gave his name, Henry Lawler, corresponding with a description forwarded from Kawhia to Captain King, of one Henry Hanson, charged with a forgery on the Rev. John Morgan, was locked up and remanded till 10 p'clock on Monday next. The duties of the Police continue as last reported, with the exception of Hakopa not yet fit for night duty, and everything here is quiet. I have the honour to be Sir, etc etc. etc. (Signed) H.
