Auckland July 21, 1871 My dear McLean, I enclose copy of Telegram from Searancke reporting the driving of Douglas and Walkers stock off the leased lands and over the boundary and copy of my answer; What is to be done? Invitations to Te Kuiti for the 30th are flying about to all Kupapas and to the Pakeha also. Te Aroha is the subject put forward and a talk of peace upon certain conditions which will probably be found impossible. I have a memo. from Heaphy about the location of Paora Toki and the Taniwi. There is no land at Waiheki nor at Wairoa, except some distance in the bush, but we have agreed that Cabbage Bay will be just the place. There is land, fishing, and isolation for them if they will consent to go there. I will see the Supt. about the land and report by next mail. The big ship has come with small freight and few passengers. Vogel has not turned up; he has been presented at Court it appears and is engaged upon a scheme for consolidating the British Empire. The French news is horrible. Maories are highly civilzed and chivalrous people in comparison with the communists of Paris. Yours very truly, Daniel Pollen
