Auckland 19 Augt. 58 Dear Richmond I have been informed that a statement was made in the house on tuesday to the effect that the Estimates of the Land purchase Dept. had only just been received before being presented in the house. I cannot conceive how such a statement could have been made considering you were furnished by myself with a draft of those estimates immediately upon your requisition about the 5 ult., on the 16th I had an appointment with you respecting the Estimates, more especially that part of them which had reference to the surveys, when some dissension took place as to whether they should be conducted by officers attached to the L. P. Dept. or otherwise, on this subject you proposed to consult your colleagues, I heard nothing more until you returned me my draft from your portfolio for the purpose of its being printed, it was again sent to your office in the shape in which it now appears and I find on reference that it was ordered to be printed on the 18th inst. I was anxious to have an expression of opinion from yourself on the question of surveys before signing the Estimate. I mention this matter hoping (if my information be correct) that some explanation will be given in the house today as it is unfair that a statement implying neglect of duty on my part should remain unanswered. I remain Yours truly Donald McLean
