Auckland 27th Jany. 1871 Dear Sir, I have been informed that a Survey of lots of land awarded to Natives in the locality of Tamahere, near Cambridge, is to be given out by the Govt. and as the Honble. Mr. McLean the Native Minister is in Town, I would feel much indebted to you if you would kindly use your influence with that Gentleman, to give, or recommend me for the performance of the Survey - I have completed the survey of a large number of lots similarly awarded in the Waikato and always gave satisfaction both to the Govt. and the Natives - It is needless to remark that I possess a thorough knowledge of the districts and am personally acquainted with nearly all the natives there, in fact I consider I have a claim for a share at least of any work that may offer in consideration of my past services in the Waikato during the War - testimonials which before placed before you for the purpose of submitting to Mr. McLean but which are now in the possession of Major Heaphy who is out of Town - Hoping you will excuse the trouble I give you in the matter, particularly at this time when you are so fully occupied in the Council, I am, Dear Sir Yours very truly Jno. O'Meara Licensed Sur. The Honble. G. M. O' Rourke Speaker of the Provincial Council. I have very great pleasure in recommending this application to the favourable consideration of Mr. McLean. I have been personally acquainted with Mr. O'Meara since his arrival in the Colony. He bears a very high character and is thoroughly conversant with the Waikato district and the Native owners. G. M.
