Letter from T.G.B. to Donald McLean Esq. dated 3rd. June (no year date.) My dear McLean, Ministers have been liberal enough in their instructions to you, and will guarantee Crown Grants for the natives who may sell their land on the West Coast. I should recommend you to mark out the Reserves they require, and specify them on the Deed of Sale. This will render the sale invalid if the reserves are disputed, and the matter is so important that I think you should do well to clinch the purchase absolutely if you can, with reference to us. I trust you will have been able to purchase at Napier. I have suggested the communication with the Superintendent in this case, though I object to it in all others. I have done so because if the price is excessive it will be advisable that he should be a party to it. I know you will be glad to hear that we had a glorious passage, and found all well. Daldy (?) has a great meeting about land purchase to-morrow. I saw him this morning, and found him much more reasonable than I expected. I have no time to say more. Yours very sincerely (Signed) T.G.B. (to foregoing letter) I cannot tell you how much satisfied I was with my visit to Hawke's Bay. I keep thinking over it. I have been received so pleasantly in every part of New Zealand. T.G.B. To:- Donald McLean Esq.
