Opepe 5 May 70. My dear Sir, I am in receipt of yours of the 11th. ult. At present I am in communication with Captain Mair (by Mr. Ormonds orders) organising an expedition to go into the Uniwera county from this side until I hear from Muir I do not know whether I shall be able to get the necessary force together for I cannot spare more than 100 Constabulary, besides I think it would be very injudicious to attempt it without Natives. Sawyers are busy at work at most of the posts and I hope to have the men comfortably hutted before very long. Mounted scouts are sent out daily from this post, and every precaution taken to prevent Te Kootis return to the Waikato. Telegraph posts are erected close to the Rangataiki, and will be very shortly as far as this post. I remain, Yours truly, Jno. Roberts.
