Napier - Oct. 29th 1868 Sir, I have the honor to inform you that the orderly from Taupo arrived in Napier yesterday evening accompanied by Paora Hapes son - who reported that 2 men and 1 woman of the Urewera tribe would arrive this Evg, at Tarehas Pah - that Paora Hape would not let them stop at his place - The pack horses to Taupo were examined by Paora Hape and were found to contain nothing but blankets, sugar, tea, tobaco and a couple boxes of matches. In Mr. Rhodes' absence I requested Mr. Hamlin to proceed to Pawhakao and learn the purport of the 2 men and woman's visit and to glean any further information he could either in reference to the Urewera tribe or ex-prisoners etc. Mr. Hamlin has just returned and report as follows. 2 men and woman of Urewera tribe are down to tangi over a child of Wi at Pawhuakairo Named McLean and Margarata did not find out name of the other. They say that the Ureweras do not intend to join the Te Kooti, They respect the line drawn by your Honor and Kopu when peace was made at Waikaremoana - and so long as we do not cross the line - they will not come this way - hut if Te Kooti fights at Opotiki pah - they will join him then - This is the only news, I have the honor to be Sir Your most obt. St. Geo. Thos. Fannin
