Decr. 10th, 1868 My Dear Richmond, Atkinson has just arrived and I advised him to remain here a few days and that he would be able to see you when you return from Poverty Bay -- I am trying to get coals for the ''Sturt'' from the Phoebe I do not know yet if it can be done the contractor here is without any. I feel very anxious to hear what you are going to do next and that late successes are followed up. The Charybdis has gone to Wanganui also some more of the Armed Constabulary and ammunition. Haultain was at the Hutt and Stafford had nothing further for you by last telegram at ½ past 2 P.M. I hope Karaurias coffin will come all right the natives think much of him and the Europeans will accompany his remains from the Wharf to the Maori Club as a tribute of respect to the chiefs of the district. The 'Sturt' was not ready until 1/2 past 1 P.M. and I considered as there was letters for you on board that she should await the arrival of the ''Phoebe'' she is now alongside 4 P.M. and when coaled will steam for Poverty Bay at 5. I remain, Yours very truly, (Signed) Donald McLean
