Napier. 16th. October 1868. Dear Sir, I have to request that you will, for the present, remain at the Wairoa, and avoid making any reference to the return of arms, or payment to natives, for past services. I mention this to avoid future complications. You will easily understand the reason. Do all you can to keep Paora te Apatu, Hamana, old Maihi, Te Koari's tribe, Ihaka, and the other Chiefs, in good spirits; and report direct to me, in reference to what is going on. I have taken the direction of affairs here, and on the East Coast; and you will send your Reports through me. I remain Yours very truly, (Signed) Donald McLean. To:- F.E. Hamlin Esq.
