Dear McLean, As I have an opportunity of sending to Havelock I enclose rough draft of protest on Greens appointment I think it probably should be curtailed and that it might be altered very much for the better. Will you kindly make such improvements in it. I do not propose sending it till I hear that Col. Haultain has returned to Wellington do you know when this will be. In my hurried letter to you on Tuesday I told you how annoyed I felt at Green's appointment over my head this feeling of annoyance has not decreased since. Not that I should have objected to Green in the least had they appointed him before they had discovered that I was an object at whom all loyal followers of Stafford Whitmore and Co. should throw a stone. Who are the authors of the appointment I cant guess except Russell and Whitmore I trust you will be able to find out. It is clear to me that they do not want an officer liable to take the command whose promotion was applied for by you and who does not hesitate to express his admiration of the manner in which you checked the rebellion on this Coast. They think they may take away Greens General Govt. appointment if he speaks too freely in fact this has been said before me. Of course it is their intention by studied insult to make me resign altogether if possible but I dont think it would be fair to you or me to let them feel that they had beaten so far. Besides Henry Russell has another little game Waipukurau must be in a separate district from Napier Waipawamate (not Waipawa) to be Head Quarters. Unfortunately there are not enough inhabitants south of Waipawa so that I presume Hamden must be taken in with Waipukurau. If I am out of the way a grateful country might make him Major in command. But I fear I must bore you frightfully with my grievance. How fortunate you are to have got over the shearing before the rain came on. I am in the middle of both shearing and harvesting and I fear all my crops will be lost I am anxious to hear what damage has been done at Meanee I hope they have escaped a flood there. Today I think the moon changes and I hope we shall see the sun once more. Is there no chance of your coming up here I wish you would. I hope the Waipawa Telegraph Station is going on without delay.
