Wairoa June 20th/65 Dear Sir I wrote to you on the 14th a private letter, also another, The one respecting the runanga at the Wakaki was written immediately after hearing that affairs were worse than I had previously thought I had been closely watching the case from the first, and trusted that it would fall of its own accord; but I saw at last that something must be done, and I could not tell how the step I wished to take might turn out - therefore the letter of the 14th - But every thing passed off as well as I could expect - There are rumours to the effect that the Hauhau will all the Europeans and Ioyal natives in august, and perhaps for their credit sake they may try some movement - of course constant attention is required - I wish the steamer could come about tuesday 26th or 27th - as Paul, Kopu and others want to go to Napier to fetch the money for this place I expect to finish it this week - They have earned one trip in the steamer - I have just received a letter from you dated June 1st with respect to Teira Toheriri's offer of land. I have got one from Ihaka Waanga who appears to be very much excited about it, so also is paora Apatu and many others. It is done in revenge to Ihaka Waanga and includes all his cultivations But what appears to annoy them most is the £100 you gave Ihaka Makahui and Teira all of which they spent - and they are now jeering at old Ihaka - It is the same piece of land I wrote to you about when I first went to the Mahia it consists of a large extent of rough wooded ranges and a large swamp with about one hundred acres of pretty good land - I can go and survey it, but it would be nonsense for me to try to do more as I told the people it was no use at present, and they told me that it did not matter what I said, that they would go to Napier and get money for it - No man can do anything with Natives when they are able to do that The piece is claimed by half the natives on the coast, It is on the Ranga ta whao block If the Government have got the money to spare that purchase could be perhaps made use of as a stepping stone to some thing else - I remain, Dear Sir Your Ot.
