Kawhia 16 Aug. 47 My Dr. Sir, Yours of the 5 July found me at Auckland wither I had gone to take Mrs.Whiteley on account of her illness. I am thankful to say she is much better. We arrived here on Saturday last - of course I am now all raruraru and cannot write much. I say old Rauparaha who with his friends Te Werowero ma seemed as happy as he wished to be. I also saw the Governor - he takes a different view of Earl Greys despatch to what most other people do I think however that the efforts which are being made to get the instructions repeated are called for The Malabar arrived with Prisoners just before I left Auckland and the Steamer started for Port Nicholson. We were all very sorry to hear of the objections of the natives to the payment of the land as you offered them. Thus this infatuated people often stand in the way of their own interest and set their best friends against them I trust however you will yet succeed with them. Patience is a very essential ingredient in the management of natives and you have need of patience in no ordinary degree. I have not a copy of the letter to Capt. FitzRoy you refer to. Mrs W. thanks you sincerely for the very kind and very acceptable present of bread and biscuits - (indeed I ought not to call it a present but would offer to pay you for them but fear so to offend) and also for your kind offer to lend your horse to meet her on her way to New Plymouth but as matters stand at present having been twice to Auckland in less than 12 months she must be excused visiting N. P. at present. But I must conclude in haste and remain Yours truly J. Whiteley P.S. If Mr.Turton does not take the whole of the £20 perhaps I shall draw on you by and bye in favour of Mr Schnackenberg. J.W.
