Taranaki October 5th. 1850. Sir, I have the honour to acknowledge your despatches dated Manawatu the 24th. and Rangitikei the 26th. of September, received yesterday by the Wellington Overland Mail; and to inform you that the Police Reports from New Plymouth are uniformly marked "Overland Mail", in order that they may not be transmitted by any another conveyance. I have informed Mr. Smart of your intentions to settle, if possible, the dispute about that portion of land immediately outside the Fitz Roy boundary, on your return to this settlement, with a recommendation not to cultivate it, until permanently and satisfactorily arranged by you. Owing to the few Police at my disposal, namely Privates Johnson, Heale and Hakopa, whose services are required in and about the town, it does not seem practicable to employ them in repairing roads, unless you wish the afternoon devoted to that purpose, in addition to the night duties, which should not be neglected. Your instructions in reference to the disputed land on Major Lloyd's section at Omata, will be attended to forthwith, since E Waka evinces no intention to abandon his occupation of it. I will consult with Honi Ropiha on Monday next, and hope in a short time, to see all further opposition removed. I have the honour to be Sir, Your most obedient servant (Signed) H. Halse. Sergt. A.P.F. To:- D. McLean Esq. J.P. Inspector of Police.
