Letter from T.G.B. to Donald McLean Esq. dated August 27th. My dear McLean, I have not a minute to write to you, but I send you the enclosed, from Whiteley. I am anxious that some native Officer should reside in the Wairarapa, and have pressed Richmond on the subject. He admits the necessity, but demurs about money. I have had long discussions about Sewell's Native Bill. Ministers sent a nominated Council, and have prepared two Bills, which I could not assent to, as containing many of the objections of the old Bills. Since then I have been consulting with Judge Martin and the Bishop, and hope to concoct some plan which I must send by next mail, in order to get the answer before the meeting of the Assembly. I miss your advice, therefore, very much. Carleton is more rabid than usual, but I doubt if the public go with him. He is now going to address the Secretary of State. The mail only came in last night, and goes out at two to-day, so I have no time for more; though I have much to say. Yours sincerely (Signed) T.G.B. August 27th. (no year) Send any instructions you can, to New Plymouth. That land ought to be bought at once. To:- Donald McLean Esq.
