Raglan Oct. 10/72 The Honble. Donald McLean, C. M. G. My dear Sir, I learn from my Rihia that letters have been received by William Barton and Hone Te One: and that our natives are pleased with these letters (not from you) saying "katahi ka mau te rongo, no te mea, ekore e tirohia nga kohuru, me Waikato ka hoki ki te Maori" - Now I am one of those whose opinion was always in favour of peace - still I believe, murderers ought not, and will not be pardoned, and the Waikato is not likely to be restored to the natives. Such letters, as I hear, have been sent here, can only do harm. I sincerely hope you will remain Native Minister. Since 1860 native affairs have never been in a better condition, than they are at present. I am afraid - almost certain - if another succeed you in that office we shall soon have trouble again. I remain, My dear Sir, Faithfully yours C.H. Schnackenberg.
