My dear McLean, Matters are in such a state that I can see nothing from Ministers and it is not certain what may be result of the present debates. I think it will be better to ask them to make provision for the meeting of a conference in 1861 without attending to the amount. When you have time dont forget the arrangement about Chiefs' salary for we ought to get this Ministry to assent: their position is certainly not safe though I hope they will get through somehow.
