Letter from H. T. Kemp to Donald McLean dated 22nd. November 1856. Waimate Bay of Islands 22nd. November 1856 My dear McLean, By this conveyance I forward the Requisitions you ask for, including a Sum sufficient to cover the amount named in your letter. I have placed the items in the most simple manner I could, and at even periods. The advances made for the Oruru business, I have placed under a separate heading, so that you may, if you think right, place it to account of "Purchases"; and as we are so well in the quarter, I have estimated to December, instead of monthly, as you recommend. The system of making advances from private funds, is generally considered objectionable, how ever anxious we may be to render assistance to the Government. Hence the desirableness of having a few pounds always at hand. They have ample security, --- if not upon --- they always have up-on our salaries; where so small an amount has to be disbursed and accounted for. But I always rely upon your support and recommendations, as more than sufficient. Please to forward the balance by first chance. By the Gazette I see your Official appointment as Native Secretary; and Bell's arrival. He seems to have been fairly driven out of Wellington. I think he will have to deal very cautiously in settling these claims especially when the natives raise any opposition. This will have to be guarded against, or they will be a time on the unfortunate claimants. Believe me yours faithfully (Signed) H. T. Kemp. To:--- Donald McLean Esq.
