9th May, 1861. My dear Sir, I have not time to write you officially any more, for I have only been in bed two hours last night. I have seen a Native from Waipa and Wiremu Kingi is to be there today certain, he is escorted by all the Principal Ngatimaniapoto Chiefs, Hikaka Anatipa Tuhoro, Tikaka and nearly I believe quite 200 men, altogether at Ngaruawahia at the meeting to take place there will not be less than 1,000 Fighting men collected together. Knowing this and how little will sometimes excite a Native especially when collected together in large bodies it will be necessary for us to be on our guard. Let me know if I am to remain in the neighbourhood of Ngaruawahia at the time of the meeting. I may in its neighbourhood hear what is going on, but leave it to you to say what I had better do.
