I have written you an official about payment for the assessors --- they wont understand the argument about the "public good" but refer to the simple fact that Maories pay then why should they not receive. By the way you will, I expect, have a visit from Raharuhi soon and I hope he will come to you full handed, he will then be sure to speak to you about the Mill. I should like you, if you see no objection, to throw him back a good deal upon me that I may make "political capital" out of any advance that may be made which I should prefer being made to the three Assessors, and not to Raharuhi individually, as they are equally concerned in the project. I have today made an arrangement with Mr. Harris for a new lease of this House --- I have taken it for twelve months from next month with the option of a renewal for two years so that I need not say any more just now about a grant for a House --- altho there are many reasons why the land recently bought should be occupied by me as soon as possible --- not the least of these is that Natives are already asking "why was this land bought for the Governor if the Magistrate is not going to live upon it". The Waerengahika business is progressing satisfactorily, altho not exactly as I should like. I hope by this mail to send up the Deed and Report I had nothing to do with drawing up the Deed or should have worded it differently, however I hope it will answer the purpose, as the Archdn. is anxious to get the Grant. He is expecting to go to Auckland by the Fancy this trip so that you are likely to see him as soon as this.
