July 12 1860 My dear McLean, I have been thinking that it will be necessary to be very careful in your speech about Teire's title. Whittaker has suggested to me that every pains will be taken to pick a hole in it by the Missionary party and that it would be as well to let him and Richmond have a look at it before you deliver it in public. If you have no objection to this it might be as well to fix a day on which you would explain the case to the chiefs which will satisfy them on the subject and in the mean time you might get the case up carefully and shew it to Whittaker. I think I shall let Irving take all the men the Cordelia can carry and go tomorrow to Taranaki. If you have any thing to send let me have it tonight. I fear Parris is sadly neglected. Believe me in great haste, Yours sincerely, T. G. B.
