Monday, 10 August 57. My dear Sir, On Saturday last, Mahau and other Natives came into Town and offered Mr. Parris, Waiongaua for sale. They appeared to me to be unanimous, still, I have no doubt some oppositionists will turn up who were not present at the meeting. There was no discussion about the boundaries. The Ikamoana is, in my opinion, the key to a large purchase of land to Onaero, if not further North, and the last information I have been enabled to gather, leads me to believe that if land is obtained, it will gradually be got South of Omata. The present moment seems most favourable for entering into negotiations with the natives provided money can be obtained for the purpose, and I believe that a knowledge of money being here would turn many natives who are inclined to join the opposition under an impression that the land offer will not be accepted. Mahau dictated the following as a whakamahauhau tanga, E tauhou au, e tauhou koe, he kai mau te marama o tenei tauhou, pikipiki maunga tangaengae, tahauora, tahau ariki. The above is intended for your information or as Mahau said a pledge of his sincerity. Faithfully yours, H. Halse. To:- McLean Esq. I have just received information of Katatore's intention to send a messenger to Ngatiruanui this day, for the purpose of ascertaining whether that tribe is still willing to support him in opposing land sales. by the end of the week therefore I may hear more on this subject. H. H.
