Auckland, 7 March, 1854. My Dear McLean, I have just received your letter of the 20th ult. and have shewn it to Colonel Wynyard as it throws light on your public proceedings. The Colonel highly approves of your intended efforts to purchase lands not only at New Plymouth but at Kawhia and other places on your way up to Auckland. Whatever you do in that way you may be sure of being approved. There is an increasing demand for land here and your services for thepurchase of it are much wanted. Some 38 acres bought from the Houraki Natives of a portion of their land between Auckland and St. Johns College for £100 lately has just been sold at an average price of about £50 per acre. Our great want however is land on the Waikato and Waipa which you may be able to take preliminary steps to obtain when on your way to Auckland. I have not been able to see much of your Cousin yet as I have been very busy, but I know he is well lodged and is in good hands. He has declined any employment until you arrive. You will not receive any answers to your public letters by this post, and I write this in a very hurried manner to let you know we have our eye upon you, and will be glad to see you here. You will of course on your reaching this make your way to my house just outside the Barrack Gate towards Mount Eden, where I will be glad to give you a hearty welcome. I remain, Yours truly, A. Sinclair.
