. Burke's Pass Canterbury N.Z.(undated) D. McLean etc. etc. etc., Sir, Having watched the promotings in the North, with much interest, I beg to tender you my services, provided you assist me in carrying out my views; which are not only easy, but I am certain success will be the result. Bring the two (2) Royal Mortars from Christchurch to the front, manned for service, until the war is over. I will drill them, and lead them into action .... If possible, get some 3 pr. Rockets, and the lightest shell. I can use them, and with effect. I am an old soldier, used to the use of these arms. I beg to refer you to the Duke of Richmond, and Captain Everard, Castle Dublin; or St. John Branigan Esq. Otago; or Certificates from Officers under whom I have served in the Crimea, India, or China; in the Imperial Army; or Officers in the Colonial Defence. But I preferred to be tried before any confirmation of rank should take place. As to my possession here - I am a farmer, having 100 acres Freehold, on the Ashburton; and this evening have twelve names of men, handy, and willing to follow me; all of which have served. Should you require my services, if you would kindly address to the Post Office, Burke's Pass, as early as possible, you will oblige - Yours most respectfully (Signed) H.J.H. Hewson (?) N.B. Signature rather indecipherable, may be wrong.)
