Napier 22 Sept. 1855. Dear Maclean, The St. Kilda is off. I scribble you a line by her. Cooper has not yet returned from Wellington. I hope this will catch returned from Taranaki. Things are going on here as usual. Moana Nui grumbling I hear very much at reports of Hapuku's having received monies at Auckland. Be careful not to get up a Taranaki disturbance I wish you would get that affair about the Resident Magistrateship settled. Cooper would do well for it I need no interpreter. But I bargain of course for same salary as other Commissioners, as with a clerk, there would be sufficent work in the one department. I heard from Strang the other day --- all well and jolly. I have just returned from a visit to Johan. The old boy had a fall from his horse and sprained his shoulder which obliged him to keep quiet some days. He is recovered by this time. I have kept Macdonnell a month or two, allowing him to live up the country and come in on court days. But this is a bad arrangement He would otherwise have departed immediately. The "town" survey is just finished. I hoped to have sent plans etc. to Auckland by this vessel and will if she delays a few days. Lots of sections for sale. to be absorbed to a great extent. The island, spits and flat last purchased by you are laid out --- the glats in quarter and half acre sections --- the hills in 4 or 5 acre lots. 5 or 600 sections in all. The old pah is land not now surveyed --- as you made some promise or other to the natives about it. I have sent a great budget of accounts to Knight which I trust will "choke his luff" as the sailors say for some time. Believe me Yours ever truly, A. Domett. D. McLean Esq.
