Te Wairoa June 29th. 1866 Sir I have the honor to forward the enclosed documents and to ask your instructions as to procuring the amount due to the four Native Policemen named in the Estimate. I beg to call it to your Honors Notice that two out of the four mentioned men were sent to The Chatham Islands with the prisoners and have not yet returned. As the Honble. the Native Minister has mentioned in his "memo" that the services of the Native Contingent are not required, I have warned them, that after the end of the current quarter such will be the case. I have also the honor to call you attention to the fact that I am unable to procure the services of a Karere at the rate of allowance by the Government and that I have only one European Policeman who would hardly be able to serve Native 'summons' as he has other duties to perform and moreover is utterly ignorant of the Native language. I have the honor to be Sir Your most obt. servant S. Deighton R.M. Wairoa. To: His Honor D McLean Napier
