Wairoa Augt. 16/67 My dear Sir I was not aware that Mr. Biggs was sending a special messenger or I should have written you by the same opportunity. You have heard from him however how the meeting went off Tamihana and te Hapunia as usual tried on their little games but with indifferent success. With regard to the Hau Haus inland I am still of the opinion that some movement is intended in the summer time but of course it is difficult to say with any degree of certainty what it will be. The most suspicious circumstance is that messengers are frequently passing backwards from different places to Waikari Moana. I saw Nama yesterday and he informed me that they are continually crossing the lake and if so must be incommunication with the supposed friendly natives who if you remember were allowed to go back to the near side of the lake, and from the fact of my receiving no intimation from those people of the movements of the Hau Haus it leads me to suppose that they are to some extent cooperating with the Hau Haus. They have threatened Burton warning him not to go beyond a certain boundary on pain of death I do not think so much of that as if they had intended mischief they would not have been so foolish as to give a warning. I have not written officially to Govt. for the same reasons that I mentioned in my last letter to you as they are only rumours after all, but still the Natives are getting a little more excited and quite prepared for any thing that may turn up, I shall write pretty frequently as you may like to know as much as possible what is going on here. Paora behaved very well at the meeting and is clearly acknowledged here as the head man. I am my dear Sir truly yours S. Deighton.
