Auckland 6th Feby 1864 My dear McLean, Your loan Bill is all right and would have been assented to by the Governor but he is absent. There will be no difficulty and you may rely on its being pushed through at once. We feel so much the importance of locating the settlers in Hawkes Bay or Land which is suitable for them and where they will succeed that we have resolved that either one of us, or some independent authority shall go down by the next opportunity and settle the questions. The accounts from one and the other are so conflicting that it is impossible to come to a satisfactory conclusion upon the matter as it stands. Believe me to remain, Yours very truly, Fred. Whitaker His Honor, Donald MacLean, NAPIER
