Napier May 5th 1872 My dear McLean I forgot in writing yesterday to ask you to enquire whether the Auckland acclimatization Society can supply us with some Californian Quail. I saw by the papers it is proposed to shoot them so conclude they must be numerous and in such case I daresay the Society will be glad to let us have some - They would be capital birds for our country and no doubt do well. I have some money left of a Prov. Council vote for Acclimatization purposes and want to spend it before it lapses - Farmer is President of the Society at Auckland and helped me already this year to get some starlings - he will tell you if the Quail can be got - I just write about this now while I think of it- Yours always J.
