Copy Duplicate.) Original per the Lugger.) Nelson 13th. June 1845. Mr. C.H. Schanckenberg Mokau. Dear Sir, Your favour of the 25th. May per Richmond was duly handed to me by Mr. Aldred. and relying on the information contained in it, which has relieved my mind from some disagreeable reports which had reached me concerning the intentions of the natives, relative to the vessel. I have once more despatched her to your port. The letter you refer to as having forwarded for me to Kawhia, I never got. Had I received it, I would not have been so long in sending back the Lugger. I have looked anxiously for the promised intimation from you, of the natives being ready with a cargo in payment of the vessel, to fill her up, and I hope this time I will not be disappointed. They have been so long past the time agreed upon in payment for her, and pigs are now fetching so very much less that they would have at the time they ought to have been delivered; that what are put on board this time ought to be the very largest and best description. In case they should not have enough to load her entirely, I have put on board a little trade to fill her up, as I wish her back with all possible despatch. In addition to the things you mention, I have sent a few others, which I thought either you or some other of the Europeans might stand in need of. Mr. Rutter will let you have what you want of them; and should you at any time wish the vessel or any goods sent to you, by sending a letter directed to me through Mr. Charlton of Kawhia, your wishes will be attended to. It depends entirely on the natives showing an anxiety to bring forward a cargo for the vessel, and to fulfil your agreement, how soon and how often she visits you. I am most anxious for my own sake to have her paid for, and given up to them, as she is a very expensive vessel to run, and will shortly require an entire new suit of sails, - an expense no one who may have her so short in their hands, would think of giving her. Could I manage to buy up the native claim to her, I would then be willing to go the expense of docking her, altering her rig, and fitting her out a new. I trust to you disabusing the native mind of any false impression which may have been made upon it; as if I wished to act unfairly towards them, and to impress upon them the advantage of regaining their character for friendship and fair-dealing towards strangers. Hoping to hear in reply, I am etc., (Signed) A. Perry. To:- Mr. C.H. Schanckenberg.
