Sunday Parade at 10 a.m. On duty in town during Divine Service. Te Ngahuru, Chief of Omata, and Tahana, one of the Puketapu Assessors, came to the Police Barracks and wrote to you. Posted letters to you by this day's Overland Mail to Wellington. Received Summonses against J. Webster and S. Davy. Arranged a misunderstanding between T. Tiffen and Wati, a Puketapu native. Tamati Waka came to Barracks. Visited the Watch at 11 p.m. Found Hakopa and Medland on duty, the latter was in liquor. Police engaged cleaning arms in the Resident Magistrate's office. Hakopa left for the Hua. Force in town. Met at Barracks, morning and afternoon. Te Ngahuru complained to the Resident Magistrate, of two cases of Cattle Trespass; one by Mr. Wicksteed's, outside the Omata Block; the other outside the Tataraimaka Block; and that Mr. Wicksteed had refused to pay anything. Captain King paid �1 for Mr. Cutfield, being amount estimated by Te Ngahuru. Police on duty in Town during the day. The night watch was set at 6 p.m., and continued till 4 a.m. General muster and drill. Overland Mail from Wellington. Received a packet from you containing letters to Captain King, Dr. Wilson, natives and me. Henare te Rongo Waka of Moturoa, and Amori, of the Kawau, came into town, and told me that they intended to return Mr. Richardson's pigs. Hoera, of Moturoa, returned the pig taken by him, for damage done to his crops. A whale boat and canoe, with 20 natives on board, from Warekauri, arrived here, the party headed by two Chiefs, named Wakaruru and Tiohuka, is returning to Pukeearuhe. Parade at ten o'clock. A small party of natives belonging to this district, arrived from the South, and went to the Kawau. Medland reported sick. Arranged a difference between Ihakara, of the Waiwakaiho, and J. Street, one of the workmen at Mr. Oliver's Mill. Overland Mail from Auckland. The ship "Stately", 700 tons, arrived there from England. The schooner "Diana", having struck on the bar at Mokau and sprung a leak, was run on shore here at the landing place, and hauled up during the night. The "Lucy James" returned, and again stood out to sea. Anniversary of the formation of the Police in this settlement. Medland returned on duty. Overland Mail left for Auckland. Died, at the Hua, Turihira, sister to Hakopa. Died, at Waitara, Uriwhenua, Chief of the Tanhana. Court Day. Dr. Wilson and Mr. Halse attended in place of the Resident Magistrate, indisposed. Harton v. Webster, debt; Judgement for plaintiff. The other case arranged. Te Ngahuru came to Barracks and told me that an entrance had been effected into Mr. Beetham's house at Omata, by the chimney, on Friday last, during his absence. Two boxes had been broken open, shewing the search was for money; the contents had been examined and left. Marks of a native foot were seen, and suspicion attached to Peniweri, a notoriously bad character, but no evidence being adduced, he was recommended to leave Omata, and did so. The same complained of Mr. Flight's cattle running at Oakura, and annoying the natives there. Medland absent from his night duty. Same reported sick. Ihaia and Tamati came to Barracks, to make arrangements with a carpenter, to build a house at Waitara. General muster and drill. Absent, Medland. The Resident Magistrate indisposed, and unable to come to town. Hakopa resumed his duty. Newsham reported that Mr. Adams' house at Omata had been robbed of goods to the amount of two or three pounds in value, during his absence, which is of frequent occurrence, and the house is always open. 4 p.m. Private Heale came to Barracks in liquor. 10 p.m. Same attended to his appointed duty. During the last fortnight the Police have been about the arms in the Resident Magistrate's Office in the forenoon, duty a short time in the afternoon and then the regular night watch of three or four hours during each.
