Tauranga 22nd. February 1870. My dear Mr. McLean, No news from the front. A Private, named Burrows, belonging to the Thames Volunteers, was killed last night, at the Gate Fah, by the bursting of a shell, through playing with it. I hear, through Mr. Johnston, this morning, that Johny the Frenchman's wife, named Betty, came to Te Puna, and wanted to come in. She has been with Te Kooti since the Whakatane affair; that a lot of Pirirakaus came down last night, and took her back to the bush, that there are about 40 of Te Kooti's men still in the bush; also that Te Kooti has only gone into the Urewera country to leave his women and children there; and then intends to come back here to fight. The schooner ''Jane'' leaves at once for Auckland. remaining Yours ever sincerely (Signed) H.F. Way.
