of Letter from Tiaho (Sophia) to Wi te Morehu (Te Wherro). Te Kuiti. Sept 18th 1870. To Te Morehu (Te Wherro) Friend, salutations to you, and to your ancestor. It is well that he is absent, but by and bye he will be seen. Friend, what you heard of a statement made by me about Ngapuni abd Ngatipara is correct. It was in reply to a question. It was in reply to what Potana (Nini Kukutai) said, that Taupari would be a home for me. So I said to him, why not Te Kopua or Orahiri?. I do not however think that I meant what I said to him. I did not mean it; and I only wished to give him an answer about Taupari, (i.e. so as to stop Nini's talk.) That is all about that. You say to me ''What am I to you, O Hinerongo?'' I say to you, let your heart be with your Chief, but your body your hands, your feet and your countenance are mine. I did not hear your parents' word. (Signed) From Te Mamae (Tiaho.)
