Auckland, Nov. 2, /44. My Dear Sir, I have received your letters of the 30th of Sept. and the 7th of Octr. and I am glad you are getting on so well among the Natives at Taranaki, and that all things are quiet. On the beginning of last month I received from the Treasurer your quarters half salary amounting to £28.15/- and have paid through Mr.E.Locke to the Sheriff, of which he is to write you about, the sum of £10.3/- so that with the £20 I gave you before leaving this, you are in debt £1.8/- The letter you sent by Mr. MacDougall was left at my house by some one or other I do not know, and where or when I was to pay the £12 to Mr. MacDougall I was equally ignorant till two days ago when I received a note from him to send a Cheque for the Amount. If he had called on me on his arrival with the letter I should have given him the money as I had then £8.15/- belonging to you but at the time I received his note I was out of pocket and not being in the habit of being dunned I wrote him that I had no money of yours in my possession. It will not do for me to be craved for money by any one on any account and first Mr.Coyney and then this last gentleman sending for a cheque as if I owed money I dont like. I wish therefore very much you would find another to draw your Salary etc. and make the payments you require, and have the authority you gave to me cancelled. I shall be glad to do what I can for you at all times, but I dont like to have anything to do with money matters and particularly to have strangers asking me for what I dont owe and as if I were under an obligation to them. I dont blame you in the affair as you were perhaps not aware that the Government officers are only paid half Salaries at present and you might suppose I had sufficient funds of yours in my hand. Besides I believe there are some Contingent expenses owing you which have not been paid in consequence of the irregularity of the Accounts. If all these had been paid me for you I should have had more than sufficient to meet the demands, that have been made on me - I shall be glad to hear from you again and that you continue to like the country and get on well with the people. I remain, My Dear Sir, Your truly, Andrew Sinclair.
