Sydney, Sunday morning 12th Septr. /58 My Dear Sir, I am, after arriving in Sydney yesterday, 18 days out from Auckland, making preparations to leave for Melbourne by the Steamer Wongawonga and as it is now sun rise and I must be on board at once I cannot give you much account of Sydney although I have seen the principal places, which have completely turned my brain, you would find it greatly improved since your time. Have you ever heard of a rush to the diggings, Port Curtis N. 800 from here has turned out an available gold field and all Sydney is mad, men rushing to offices to take passages for the newly discovered gold country 15 vessels crowded with passengers are about to leave and it is expected that people from Melbourne and N. Z. will follow so soon as they hear the news. Now let me tell you, for all this I cannot find out anything definite as to the yield of gold notwithstanding all that, although I am told I am a fool to go to Melbourne and not to Port Curtis, dont however send any one from New Zealand to dig until more authentic information is received --- The passage from N. Z. was long but the vessel was comfortable and we fared well in every respect so I dont regret having come by the American. I met McLean the Bristol man who lost two vessels lately he was very civil and made kind enquiries after you and your brother the Captain who I said was doing well. Will you kindly tell Cunningham that as I have no time to write to him now, that I gave a small parcel to Captn. Worth for him, who promised to deliver it safely, although I think he will be chartered for the diggings instead of Auckland --- You may expect to find a long letter from me soon after I reach Melbourne.
