'Te Wairoa' March 16th 69 Sir, I have the honor to report to you for the information of the Govt: The full particulars of the recent outrage committed by the 'Hau Haus' in our District. Upon hearing the account given by ''Felix Goulet' already furnished you -- I called upon the Chief by direction of the Officer Commanding, to send out a party to ascertain the toth of these accounts -- On Saturday last, 52 men under ''Kobea and ''Harimanaw started up the ''Waiau'' in canoes, on reaching Serj: Keatings, they came upon tracks of the enemy, who had however taken every precaution to conceal their movements, by walking in the bed of the River; in a small scrub near at hand they found an extensive camping ground, a little above traces of pigs belonging to Serj; Keating having been dragged off, at 'Kairangaranga' the canoes were left under a guard of 30 men 10 then proceeded to Felix Goulet's station the remainder watching their movements from the Hill top, so as to render assistance if needed. On the arrival at the scene of the murders they found the body of Rihimona tahatua rangai lying in the water stripped of its clothing -- the canoe bottom upwards -- the Bales of Wool on the Beach -- a little above, the horse ridden by 'Rihimona' shot and also lying in the water -- On reaching Felix's House, they found that nearly everything had been carried off. The glass dropped by Felix in the small canoe upon his flight was recovered, returning down stream from thence they came upon the Body of 'Te Amo Takirau untouched. save by the bullet wounds -- his greenstone, some money in his pocket, intact. The Body of 'Te Warehi' was not to be seen but hie grey Horse was found and brought away. The party buried the remains of 'Te Amo' and 'Rihimona' and returned as they were ordered to do, after accomplishing the purpose for which they were sent out. They further report having seen many fires at 'Waihi' and at 'Takurangi'. I would point out to the special notice of the government, that the enemy in this instance had descended to within (2) miles in a direct line of the European settlement at 'Turiroa' and without notice. The scouts employed being clearly inadequate to supplying any reliable and timely notice of the movement of the enemy -- Serj: Keatings promises are within a very short distance of 'Te Kopa' -- indeed it is scarcely possible under existing circumstances for any men however good Individually to execute this duty satisfactorily -- The only plan in my view which offers any chance of security is to continue a somewhat similar system of movement to that conducted by Capt. Spiller some time since in conjunction with the scouting now in practice -- The security which should be ours, is now felt by the enemy who know that we will not pass certain limits, and can therefore mature their plans and carry them into execution against us in safety. I have no hesitation whatever in saying that I daily anticipate hearing an attack made upon 'Tariroa' and that it can be made and made with ease and comparatively little risk is patent to everybody. No place now beyond a circle of three or four miles from the Township is safe. I would point out also that the friendly natives are anxious in the extreme to revenge these outrages -- are disquieted and hinderedfrom their lawful pursuit and contribute by their fears to render the general insecurity much greater -- I am not seeking to give any unnecessary alarm, but simply to make it quite clear, that under the present condition of things any event may occur, and however disasterous need not excite any wonderment or surprise. All the advantages lie on the side of the enemy, and I am greatly in error if 'Te Waru' has not more than barren promise of assistance, in daring to push his scouts to such close proximity to our settlement.
