Te Wairoa, 6 November, 1867. My dear Mr. McLean, I am glad to be able to tell you that the money question has been settled today with little or no difficulty The £800 has been divided as follows £400 to Mere Karaka and her people £200 to Paora te Apatu. Maihi Kai Moana and their people £200 to Maraki -Ihakara Tamihana Taruki and their people we may now I think look upon the Wairoa difficulties as over - Mr. Burton seems to have acted in a most stupid manner in surveying the boundaries and to have caused some little disatisfaction amongst the Natives by taking more land for the government than was agreed upon these mistakes will of course have to be rectified I am glad to say that all the Natives are now made easy on this subject by my assuring them that the boundaries agreed upon at Hatepe shall be strictly adhered to. I have written to Locke to tell him of what has been done as he is the responsible person. I shall start about Saturday for Poverty Bay where I hope I shall soon see you. Please to send me a line as soon as you have made up your mind about what you intend doing. I remain, Yours very truly, Reginald Newton Biggs.
