Letter from T.G.B. to Donald McLean dated October 1st. (no year) My dear McLean, I have been talking to some of the members of your Committee, and I gather that you should guard most carefully against two things:- First, - Do not let any dislike or distrust of Fenton appear in what you say. Your having said that he cannot speak Maori has been used against you, and your opponents will endeavour to make it appear that you disapproved his scheme because you disliked the man. Be careful on the subject. Second, - Do not consent to give any account of the past, or proposals for the future. Anything you can say will be open to dispute, and every word will be miscontrued. Pray say the same to Smith and Rogan. I write this late at night, and send it to you in the morning. Believe me always, Oct. Yours sincerely (Signed) T.G.B. Your letter about Teraiah is very encouraging.
