Turanga 26 June 1860 D. McLean Esqre. My dear Sir, You ask me how Edward is getting on I grieve to say but poorly. The way in which he lost his situation at Napier and subsequent reports has grieved me much. I fear he has but gloomy future in prospect. I regret exceedingly his coming here. He is now one of Capt. Reads traders but doing little or nothing he does not appear to me to possess the energy He has disposed of the whole of his property in Land, cattle etc. and I assure you I shall make no further advances which in my case were sacrifices as at the time I was pushing him by every means in my power, I was crippling my own means and as it would appear for no good purpose. I wish he could be induced to leave Turanga but he may relapse into the style of many of our Old Pakeha Maoris. Would a word from you have any effect? Ever sincerely, J. H. Harris
