Keri Keri 7th. Dec. 1861. Dear McLean, I again trouble on behalf of Duncan. I have today written to the Native Minister which I suppose I ought to have - with a few remarks upon Mr. Clarke's letter. Of course as he is now Lord and Master I thought it necessary to be careful - but such nonsense is sickening. He begins It is my painful duty etc. etc. between ourselves - King William he only answered Mr. Clarke's questions - read his letter to the Native Minister and you will see the idea conveyed by it. I hope he will not be dismissed, it will be cruel - after your 17 years faithful services - to be turned adrift without knowing why - not even the chance of explanation. In haste, Yours faithfully, James R. Clendon.
