Wednesday 19th My Dear Mr. McLean I send you the Reports you telegraphed for - Also a memo. about Worgan - You will see he got a severe rap from the judge. Will you excuse me if I hint that it would be beneath you to take the slightest notice of what was said or insinuated by him? No witnesses were called, and Collins, the counsel, said - to the Jury "I leave the case entirely as we have heard it from Mr. Worgan himself on cross-examination. He asks for a £1000 damages for his character. Would any of the Jury like to go out of this Court with a £1000 if they had at the same time to bear such a character as Mr. Worgan has confessed himself to possess". He left Court a branded liar. I do not know whether the Superintendent is writing to you by this mail about Buller's work at Murimotu, or whether he has, in accordance with your letter to him, consulted you before employing him - They are going to give him Bunny etc. a big dinner here in the theatre - 7/6 a ticket, cheap and nasty, were it not that a good many have put down fivers to cover the expense I could find no trace in the shipping news about Sheehan's leaving, so I strolled up to Osgood's, asked for a glass of beer, and in chatting asked whether Kelly and Sheehan had not gone together - So Osgood rummaged up his books and shewed me that S. had gone on the 6th - On that date the Luna was the only steamer which left, and she went to Napier. Mr. Reynolds tells me Luna will be here about Friday, and that he wants her back by the 12th Decr., to go round lighthouses etc. for a month - I'll come up with papers, and I want to take my wife for a bit of a change - I have asked for leave by wire - Believe me Yours truly J. H. H. St. John I have just heard Mr. Sewell has resigned his seat, but of course you know that -
