Wednesday, 24 Mar., /58. My dear Sir, I saw W. Kingi yesterday, told him Mr. Charles Brown wished to find a road between Waitara and Mokau, and asked for the services of 4 natives to accompany him. W. K. said I was foolish to ask such a question, indeed the proposition was a Kahuru, if, he said, Nikerima and Ihaia were on the north side of Paraninihi. The man required would be supplied, as matters stood he must decline. W. K. described the country as very broken and considered it impracticable to make a bridle path over it. The arrival of a party of 15 Kawhia natives at Tamati Ngarewa's stockade on the north side of the river, put a stop to the conversation. Parris and I crossed over and from the little we could learn the visit appeared to be for the purpose of endeavouring to make peace between W. K. and Ihaia --- Wiremu Kumete or Hoeta was said to be the upako of the party, and it is understood they will come on to Moturoa.
