Letter from H.T. Kemp to Donald McLean, dated 15th. February 1854. Wellington 15th. February 1854. My dear McLean, I this day received your packet of letters; and as to-morrow I shall probably be en-gaged in rectifying the Taranaki business with the people here, I avail myself of a quiet moment to drop you what I shall call a private note beforehand. First of all, I am thankful to find that you have so far safely arrived in that fearful tub of a thing. I trust also that hereafter you will pause before you risk a life so really valuable to the people of this country. My anxiety for you has so far been removed. I find that you have heard of my Summons to Head Quarters. I feel pleasure in thinking that Sir George, in the midst of the confusion, had not forgotten me. I am also glad to find that notwithstanding the Provincial opposition to Cooper, the Governor has also taken care of him. No news in particular, but this I will mention, - that Dr. Knight is visiting the different settlements in the Brig, collecting material upon which to found the Estimates for the General Civil Expenditure prior to the meeting of the General Assembly. It would therefore be very desirable if you could make a push on to Auckland as soon as possible, and get the land staff duly organised, and Estimates of the probable expenditure, submitted for the Governor's approval. Your being in Auckland a week or two beforehand, would enable the Government to enter into details with you, and be better able to comprehend the whole system of arrangements. I suppose we shall hear of your being styled Chief Commissioner, etc. etc. Re my letter, they, the people of the North, appear to be very urgent in reference to the acquisition of more territory, to meet the wants of the new arrivals; which seem to be constant. Under these circumstances, I trust they will give a value to our services, by treating us liberally. I think I am prepared to state my own views as soon as I arrive, should you not be already on the ground; which I sincerely hope you will be, by travelling overland from Taranaki. I send you a paper or two; sayings and doings of the Council, - Henry St. Hill, to wit. Strang writes by this opportunity, and in so far as I can assist you with this business, you may rely upon my best exertions. Give my kind regards to Cooper, if I don't write; and believe me, until we meet again, Yours very faithfully, (Signed) H.T. Kemp. To:- D. McLean Esq.
