My Dear Sir, As there is a Mail to be made up in a few Minutes for Auckland, I have only time to say that I returned from Waitara late last night after being there for 3 days and managed to see Hapurona's people inland at Te Arei, they treated me civily enough, but distinctly repudiated the Governor's right to interfere with their land, and beyond Puketakauere redoubt and everything is theirs which they mean to hold in their own way - I have now made up my mind to give over pursuing the matter further as the whole thing is a dead failure - I send you a letter to show that you are suspected of high treason.
